Seven day hiking adventure through Parque Patagonia, Chile: A hidden gem of nature. Experience the Heart of Patagonia – A relaxed, fully supported trek across one of Chile’s most breathtaking national parks
Parque Patagonia is a breathtaking national park located in the wild and remote Aysén Region of southern Chile, part of the Patagonian wilderness that spans both Chile and Argentina. This relatively new national park, established in 2018, is a haven for nature lovers, hikers, wildlife enthusiasts, and anyone seeking an authentic, off-the-beaten-path adventure.
It is part of a broader conservation effort aimed at preserving Patagonia’s unique ecosystems, which include vast forests, rivers, lakes, and glaciers, as well as its rich biodiversity. The park is situated near the Chilean Andes and is surrounded by some of the most pristine and dramatic landscapes in South America.
-
Majestic Mountains and Glaciers: The park is home to numerous scenic viewpoints that allow visitors to marvel at the grandeur of these natural landscapes.
-
Parque Patagonia encompasses a range of ecosystems, from the arid Patagonian steppe in the lower elevations to lush temperate rainforests in the valleys. The Baker River Valley, in particular, is rich with dense forests of ** lenga** (Nothofagus pumilio) and coihue trees.
-
Parque Patagonia is home to a variety of native species, including Andean condors, huemul deer, pumas, guanacos, and grey foxes. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the diversity of avian life, with condors, eagles, and even kingfishers making an appearance.
-
One of the park’s most important conservation efforts is to protect the huemul, an endangered species of South American deer. The park is one of the few places where you can see these elusive creatures in their natural habitat. Conservationists have been working to create a safe environment for their recovery.
-
The park is also home to pumas (mountain lions), and sightings of these big cats are a rare and thrilling experience. The guanaco, a wild relative of the llama, roams freely here and can often be spotted grazing on the open plains.
