Head out on a trekking adventure in Hohe Tauern National Park, into the realm of Austria’s highest mountains – accompanied by a local guide and Roope Roine.
The national park is Austria’s oldest and largest. The trails lead you through deep valleys, glacier-shaped slopes and lush alpine meadows – and all around you rise Austria’s most impressive peaks, such as the Großvenediger (3,666 m).
Hohe Tauern is known for its natural diversity: you may spot marmots, chamois, ibexes and eagles soaring high above. The area is full of old mountain trails and traditional alpine villages, whose history and culture have evolved hand in hand with the surrounding peaks for centuries.
This demanding trek is suitable for more experienced hikers who are looking for both challenge and the quiet of nature. We stay in traditional mountain huts (the first night in a hotel) in 2 - 4 person rooms. Lunch during trip and dinner on the first evening are not included in the price, but packed lunches can be purchased from the mountain huts.
The guide travels with the group from Munich to the starting point of the trek and back, so you can simply focus on enjoying the mountains.
Route Description
9 September
Arrival in Munich on a Finnair flight (not included in the price) at 09:55. Transfer by private taxi together with the guide across Bavaria to East Tyrol, included in the price. Arrival in the village of Prägraten at 17:15. Check-in at the hotel and group dinner.
10 September – Day Hike
A warm-up hike introduces you to the Virgental area. The route crosses pastures and forested slopes, offering the first views of the glaciers and peaks rising at the end of the valley.
11 September – Prägraten → Eissee-Hütte (2,521 m)
Ascent: 830 m
Morning taxi transfer to the Parkplatz Bodenalm car park, where the hike begins. The trail runs through forests and meadows into the Timmeltal valley. The ascent is gentle at first, steepening in the upper alpine areas. Eissee-Hütte sits impressively high above the valley and offers excellent views back along the route. If energy permits, an additional loop to Eissee Lake is possible (extra ascent 200 m).
12 September – Eissee-Hütte → Bonn-Matreier-Hütte (approx. 2,750 m)
Ascent: 520 m
Most of the day is spent at roughly the same elevation, with the trail winding above the Timmeltal valley beneath steep slopes. The route includes gentle ups and downs. From Bonn-Matreier-Hütte, wide views open up towards the surrounding peaks.
13 September – Bonn-Matreier-Hütte → Froßnitztal
Ascent: 610 m
The day begins with two high passes: Kälberscharte (2,807 m) and Galtenscharte (2,871 m). From the second pass, the trail descends into the impressive Froßnitztal glacier valley, dominated by the Hexenkees and Frosnitzkees glaciers. The landscape varies from alpine meadows to moraine ridges.
14 September – Froßnitztal → Matrei
Ascent: 330 m, descent: 1,450 m
The trail continues below the slopes of Kristallwand (3,310 m) before turning towards the village of Matrei. The route traverses terrain shaped by the Ice Age. We cross the Wildenkogelscharte pass (approx. 2,870 m) and then descend past Lake Löbbensee towards the Matrei valley. The accommodation reached at the end of the day looks modest from the outside, but offers comfortable interiors – a fine place to end the trek.
