A canoe adventure in Eastern Finland. 20 - 26.8.2026.

A five day canoe adventure in Eastern Finland. Nehvonniemi – Petkeljärvi – Koitere

Experience the untouched wilderness of Eastern Finland on a five-day canoe trip that carries you from the calm shores of Nehvonniemi through the serene Petkeljärvi National Park and onward to the wide, island-dotted waters of Lake Koitere. Just a stone’s throw from the Russian border, this remote region offers pure nature, peaceful silence, and a true sense of adventure.

A Route Through Wild Beauty
Your journey follows a classic water route shaped by ancient ice age ridges and crystal-clear lakes. The landscape shifts from narrow rivers lined with pine forests to open waters where islands appear like stepping stones across the horizon.

Petkeljärvi National Park
One highlight of the trip is paddling through the stunning Petkeljärvi National Park. Known for its pristine esker ridges, mirror-like lakes the park is one of Finland’s smallest but most beautiful protected areas. Its waters are exceptionally clear, and its shores offer perfect spots for rest breaks, photography, and quiet moments.

Koitere – A Lake of Islands
After leaving the national park, you’ll continue toward Lake Koitere, one of the most beautiful and least crowded large lakes in Finland. Koitere is known for its more than 100 islands, each with its own character: rocky shores, sandy beaches, sheltered coves, or wild forest rising straight from the water’s edge.

As you paddle across open water or weave between islands, you’ll experience the vastness of the landscape. In the evenings, Koitere’s sunsets stretch wide across the horizon, bathing everything in warm orange and pink light.

Wilderness Camping
Each night, you will stay in tents on designated camping areas or wilderness sites along the route. Evenings by the campfire and a sky full of stars create an unforgettable outdoor atmosphere. This area is sparsely populated, meaning you may paddle for hours without seeing another person.

Perfect for Beginners
Some canoeing experience is needed, but you do not need to be a expert. The route is well-suited for beginners thanks to calm waters and manageable daily distances. Your guides will provide all necessary equipment and basic paddling instructions, ensuring a safe and enjoyable journey.
